While we all knew Dookudu was re-writing Telugu Box Office history in the United States, a different sort of commendation has come for the movie from a most unexpected quarter. The prestigious ‘Los Angeles Times’ has featured Dookudu in their entertainment section.

We are presenting a few lines of the article here from their section.

The most popular movies at the multiplex this past weekend included some familiar titles: "The Lion King,"  "Moneyball," "Drive" and "Dookudu: Daring & Dashing."
Doo-wha?
"Dookudu," an Indian cinema offering that blends action, comedy, romance and dance sequences  (don't they always?), scored three of the seven most lucrative engagements around the country, according to the trade newspaper Variety. At a multiplex in Fairfax County, Va., the movie took in a whopping $82,000 over the weekend, a sum surpassed only by a trio of  "Moneyball" engagements (at gargantuan venues such as AMC Lincoln Square and Regal Union Square in Manhattan and the ArcLight in Hollywood).
The Virginia multiplex was an outlet of the Phoenix BIG chain, which programs Indian films along with the "Abductions" and "Dolphin Tales" of the world. (The other two engagements, incidentally, came in Edison, N.J., and suburban Dallas, where the film took in $73,000 and $71,000, respectively, over the weekend.)
Making the feat more striking: "Dookudu" is a Tollywood film, the nickname for the Telugu-language cinema from India's Andhra Pradesh region. While Hindi-oriented Bollywood movies sometimes land on domestic box-office charts, reminding the American film industry of the shadow economy that is Indian cinema in the U.S., it's rarer for a Tollywood film to pull off the feat.
So shadowy is said economy that box-office reporting sites like Hollywood.com did not even receive weekend tallies from the film's distributor (which makes a total weekend tally from the film's 30 screens impossible to report). The distributor did not reply to an email from 24 Frames seeking comment.
[Update, 4:36 p.m. Sept. 27: Harish Sajja of distributor 14 Reels Ent. tells 24 Frames that the movie has grossed $1.4 million in just three days, thanks largely to word of mouth (and despite the fact that, without subtitles, even many Indians aren't able to understand it). The previous record-holder for a Tollywood film is $1.2 million--over three months. Sajja hopes the movie holds this weekend and stays in theaters through the fall, even though it will have to compete with the glut of American films unleashed in the autumn months."It's a miracle," he said. "Nobody knows the movie is going to cross over like this."] Already a hit in India, the film pairs the very popular Mahesh Babu with the single-monikered Tollywood starlet Samantha in a two-hander that clocks in--in true India-cinema fashion--at a lightning-quick 3 hours and 10 minutes.
You can catch a trailer below, complete with "He is daring; he is dashing" tagline and enough quick cuts to make Baz Luhrmann look like Merchant Ivory. (If you want to catch the movie in the Southland, you'll have to head down to Norwalk, where it's screening opposite summer holdovers like "Transformers" and "Bad Teacher.")
So what made "Dookudu" so popular?  According to one Indian cinema website, which cited "sleek action sequences" and entertaining one-liners," it was a triumph of casting as much as anything else.
"Obviously, the most important is the star of the film, Mahesh Babu; then the film is directed by Srinu Vytla, who has earned a name for making mass entertainers [sic]. The presence of popular comedians Brahmanandam and M.S. Narayana in the film is also an asset, and ‘Dookudu’ has a beautiful heroine Samantha Ruth Prabhu, sharing screen space with Mahesh for the first time."
Well, that's enough for us.

Release date: 06 October 2011
BTmp3 Rating : 3/5
Director : Surender Reddy
Producer : BVSN Prasad
Music Director : Devi Sri Prasad
Starring: Jr NTR, Tamannaah, Shaam, Payal Ghosh, Rahman

The movie Oosaravelli hit the screens today amidst very high expectations. Young Tiger NTR and stylish director Surender Reddy teamed up once again to come up with this action thriller and NTR has Tamanna for company in this movie. The movie released in a big way across the world with a maximum number of prints and theaters. Let us see how the movie fares.
Story: Tony (NTR) is a professional goon for hire. He is a very unstable guy and those around him find it extremely difficult to estimate him. He changes himself quite a lot according to the situations and therefore those around him call him ‘oosaravelli’. He meets Niharika (Tamanna) in unusual circumstances and falls in love with her. Niharika tries to avoid him at first but soon falls for NTR’s charms. On the sidelines, Tony sets about hunting down Ajju Bhai ( Prakash Raj) and his gang. Niharika also has a past and her life is connected to Tony’s in a strange way. What is the connection between Tony and Niharika? Why does Tony hunt down Ajju Bhai? And does Tony really love Niharika? This is what the story is all about.
Whats Good: This is a very new attempt by NTR and he must be appreciated for having the courage to take up such a role. Probably no other top hero of his generation would have allowed Tamanna to walk away with such prominence and screen time. NTR’s histrionics have always been his asset and it is no different this time. His acting skills are top notch. He tried his hand at understated comedy in this movie and he did a pretty good job. His dance in the number ‘Dandia India’ is fantastic and reminds us of his Yamadonga days.
Kudos to Tamanna for delivering a stunning performance in this movie. Especially in a few scenes in the second half, she literally towers over the movie and even completely overshadows NTR. Her scenes where she pleads for help in front of Lord Anjaneya are just stupendous. She looks ultra chic in some scenes and traditional in others. Overall, a solid performance that now adds greater appeal to her beauty.
The first half of the movie is pretty lively most of the time with some good comedy scenes involving Raghubabu, Jayaprakash Reddy and NTR. The romantic scenes between NTR and Tamanna came out well and their chemistry is good.Prakash Raj is OK. Payal Ghosh is decent as Tamanna’s friend.
Niharika Niharika and Nenante Naku were shot well.
What is Bad: The screenplay and direction go for a toss in the second half. The director should have taken more care in the narration as things go downhill from the interval onwards. The climax could have been handled better. Fans of NTR from B and C centers may be disappointed as there is not much scope for heroism and commercial elements from NTR in this role.
Even in the dancing department, NTR does not have any chance to showcase his dancing talent except in Dandiya India. Prakash Raj is becoming repetitive in his Don characters and he needs to take care.Kick Shyam and M.S.Narayana make cameo appearances but they fail to make any impact. Shayaji Shinde is wasted in an incomplete role.
We can make out Surender Reddy’s attempts to induce some amount of commercial elements into the movie but they don’t gel well with the overall theme of the story. He should have stuck to his original intention.
Technical Departments : A tighter screenplay and a more ‘logical’ second half would have done wonders for the film. Cinematography is pretty good and the songs look great on screen. Editing is ok. Choreography is good for Dandiya India and Niharika. The song Brathakali has some innovative graphics.
Koratala Siva’s dialogues are ok in places but this movie does not allow NTR to indulge in his usual punch dialogues. Devi Sri Prasad’s music is good and the background score is an asset to the movie.
Verdict: Oosaravelli has some solid performances from NTR and Tamanna and the first half is pretty decent. It is in the second half that the movie starts to falter a bit and the weak climax does not help it at all. Go without any expectations about a regular high energy NTR offering and you might just enjoy Tamanna’s fabulous performance and NTR’s dances. Regular NTR fans and people from the B and C centers might find it difficult to enjoy this movie

Tollywood producers and directors are thinking out of the box and are experimenting with international talent in their films. This is great news for music buffs. The International hip hop and R&B (rhythm and blues) singer and rapper, Akon, will belt out a racy number in the forthcoming Telugu film Businessman starring Mahesh Babu and helmed by Puri Jagannath.
After busting US Billboard charts with his racy tracks in a few popular albums such as Trouble, Konvicted and Freedom, Akon is now exploring a new genre in a completely new music zone. His number Chamak Challo in Ra.One is already creating waves in the industry. “We thought of signing on Akon even before Ra.One. Since the director and star, wanted to create a buzz in the music industry, we zeroed in on this top rapper,” says composer Thaman, who is riding on the success of Dukudu, and has already composed a few tracks for the international pop star.
“Two tracks have come out really well and he could be asked to sing one of them. I am eagerly looking forward to working with such a stalwart” he adds. It looks like T-town dream merchants are thinking ‘out of the box’ to revive their winning streak.

Trust Tamanna to stand by her friends – especially when they are designers who make her look great in her movies. When Neeta and Nishika asked her to be the show stopper for their fashion show in the city, the actress agreed and scorched the ramp in a red wine dress. The actress has been shooting non stop for 50 days and says she has another 60 days to go before she takes a break for a well-deserved holiday. “I wake up everyday whining that i need a break” she sighs.
Regarding her experience on the ramp, Tamanna says that she is not a natural and is very accident prone on the catwalk – tripping and falling, she adds is a very normal thing for her. Off screen, she told the gathering of reporters, “I am a dal-chawal (kind of) person. I am not at all glamorous the way I appear on-screen.”
She currently has two movies on the sets in Tollywod and another couple in Kollywood and another untitled venture in Bollywood. That she says is just about what she can handle for the moment

Delhi based Global Indian Music Academy (GIMA) will honour AR Rahman for his contribution to the film industry, while the GIMA Award 2011 will be presented to veteran musician Dr M Balamuralikrishna.
According to the organizers, the GIMA board unanimously chose Balamuralikrishna who strode the Carnatic music world like a colossus and had been representing India abroad as a peerless cultural ambassador.
AR Rahman will be honoured in the film category, as his contribution to the cinema is immense and he had brought many laurels and awards to the country with his music talent, they said.
The GIMA awards were considered to be a coveted honour and they were presented to sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar in classical music and to Lata Mangeshkar in film music category last year.

Nani is going places, quite literally. After signing SS Rajamouli’s Eega and Krishnavamsi’s upcoming film, he’s all set to join Gautham Menon’s trilingual film. Incidentally, Ram was cast in this film; however, he walked out shortly after the shooting began citing date issues. Immediately, Gautham Menon signed up Nani to play the lead role in the film which has Samantha as the heroine. The Tamil version has Jiiva and the Hindi version of the film has Aditya Roy Kapur playing the lead roles.
The shooting is going on in full swing. Nani had earlier acted in Veppam (Sega in Telugu) which was produced by Gautham Menon’s production house Photon Kathaas in Tamil. With three big films, Nani is definitely going to make a big splash in 2012.

Release date: 23 September 2011
Director : Srinu Vytla
Producer : Achanta Gopinath, Achanta Ramu, Anil Sunkara
Music Director : Thaman
Starring: Mahesh Babu, Samantha

Prince Mahesh Babu’s ‘Dookudu’ has hit the screens today amidst unprecedented hype and expectations. The movie is the most expensive in Mahesh Babu’s career and it comes at a time when the Telugu Film Industry desperately needs a commercial blockbuster. Let us see how this film which was directed by Sreenu Vytla fares.
Story: Ajay (Mahesh Babu) is a dynamic young cop with the Mumbai Police. He is daring and dashing and goes after the Mumbai Mafia in a big way. The Mafia is headed by Nayak Bhay (Sonu Sood) and his brothers. As a series of clashes and confrontations take place between the police and the Mafia, this chase leads him to Turkey and that is where he falls in love with Prasanthi (Samantha), who is the daughter of his superior officer Nasser.
Meanwhile, another aspect of Ajay’s life begins to take centre- stage when his long comatose father Shankar Narayana (Prakash Raj) wakes up. Shankar Narayana’s coma is the result of an accident. In his prime, Shankar Narayana was a dynamic leader and a die hard fan of Sr. NTR. He was powerful and lived for the good of his people and he expects Ajay to be the same.
Afraid that Shankar Narayana might lapse into a coma if his expectations are not met, Ajay hatches a plan with the help of his associates to keep his father happy. At the same time, the Mumbai Mafia Don Nayak and Shankar Narayana share a past. What is that past? What does Ajay do to ensure his father’s happiness? And how does Ajay succeed in eliminating the bad guys? That is the crux of the story.
Performances: Mahesh Babu turns in a superb performance. He looks stunningly handsome as always and his Telangana dialect has received enthusiastic response from the crowds. Some actors overpower you into submission with their sheer charm and Mahesh Babu is one of them. His comedy timing is a revelation in this movie and he succeeds in making the audience laugh. His comedy scenes with Brahmanandam and M.S. Narayana stand out for their sheer entertainement value. His dialogues are good and punchy and have the required mass appeal.
Samantha looks good and acts well, but she hardly has any role in the movie. She appears just a few minutes before a song is due and leaves a few minutes after the song is over. But the screen chemistry between Mahesh and Samantha is a treat to watch.
Sreenu Vytla’s strength is comedy. He has a knack for bringing the best out of Brahmanandam and in Dookudu its no different. Brahmanandam is terrific as the landlord who is hell bent on making his mark as an actor. The way he requests the ‘audience’ for an sms vote is just way too hilarious. Brahmanandam is a major asset to this movie.
M.S.Narayana is way too good as the wannabe Hero Bokka Venkateswara Rao. His spoofs on Charan’s Magadheera, NTR’s Yamadonga, Balayya’s Simha and Rajni’s Robo are downright hilarious. Brahmaji is good in the limited role that he has. One wonders why he doesn’t get more full length characters.
Prakash Raj is good as the powerful local leader Shankar Narayana. Sonu Sood, Kota Srinivasa Rao and Shayaji Shinde are decent. Other actors like Chandra Mohan, Tanikella Bharani, master Bharath, Pragathi, Vennela Kishore and Nasser do their bits well. Subba Raju is wasted.
Parvati Melton looks hot in the item song ‘Poovai Poovai’.
Technical Departments : Thaman’s music is good and the background score is pretty decent. Guruvaram, Dethadi and Nee Dookudu have been shot well. Poovai Poovai is ok but not as good to see as it sounds. Cinematography by Guhan is pretty good but there were some inconsistencies in the DI work. Editing is fine.
Fights and dances were choreographed well. There are a good number of gunfights and fist fights to keep the fans and front benchers happy. Dialogues are very good and keep the proceedings interesting. Sreenu Vaitla deserves a pat for the good comedy scenes but a tighter screenplay in the second half would have really worked wonders.
Analysis and Verdict: Dookudu is a commercial Mahesh Babu entertainer all the way and is a must watch for fans. Regular movie going crowds and families will enjoy the superb comedy in the first half. Second half proceeds a little slowly and the movie is long at almost 2hrs 50minutes. But a brilliant blitzkrieg at the end by Brahmanandam and gang will liven up the proceedings again. .Brahmanandam and M.S.Narayana will stay with you a long time after you walk out of the theater. Watch it for the fantastic comedy and for Mahesh Babu’s stupendous performance.
OUR RATING:3.8/5
